Are you aware of how much data you generate through your acts on social media?
DATAFICATION
Datafication is the process of converting everyday actions into data, specifically while online. Shoshanna Zuboff (2019) refers to digital exhaust, which is produced as a product of our interaction with a system.
"Digital footprints are collections of data that represent an entity. They are the mathematical representation of everything a company knows about that entity and they are used to make predictions about its behaviour"
(Leonardi, 2020)
PROGRESSION & TRANSPARENCY
Dealing with the topic of datafication, we can’t have progression without some sort of transparency. Datafication has historically operated behind closed doors leading to multiple ethical dilemmas. In order to portray we created a transparency at some point in the game that then leads to progression.
THE GAME - DATTACK
In the game the user will be acting in a 2D side scrolle world, constructed as what seems to be an emergent narrative (Mates & Stern, 2005). The player will be able to explore the city and interact with NPC's asking for favours - the gameplay aims to establish immersion, that is achieves through agency between the game and the player (Murray, 2006). The interaction is completely up to the player to decide where they want to go.
The game world is made to illustrate a plausible future, in which people will get categorized in society as a product of their interactive behaviour. We want the user to speculate upon the amount of data they are producing when interacting with a system, as well as the potential these rich behavioural models contain - and how it might be used in the future, if we do not change our ways.
REFLECTION FROM A POST PANDEMIC POINT OF VIEW
How much have you been doing online lately? The Covid19 pandemic sent a lot of employees to home offices, the shops had to close and restaurant visits were not possible for a long period of time. This was, instead, made possible online, which has resulted in more data from consumers' everyday lives. For that reason, it has given rise to looking at how much data we actually generate in the new “new” normal.
